To say that Rothiemurchus and the wider Cairngorms is a haven for wildlife is an understatement. Here you will find some of the most well-loved of Scotland’s iconic wildlife, such as the elusive but beautiful wildcat, the majestic black Capercaillie and the charming little red squirrel. In fact an inquisitive squirrel or two will no doubt make an appearance close to the cottage during your stay. The sleek little pine martin is very shy and difficult to spot, so do please let us know if you catch sight of one whilst you are here!
Other wildlife to look out for around the Estate and the wider Cairngorms include our native Scottish deer – both red deer and their smaller cousins, the lovely little roe deer. Between late March/April and August/early September, you may see osprey flying or fishing around the lochs of the Cairngorms – there is a nest at RSPB Loch Garten and another near Loch Insh. Peregrine falcons famously nest at the crags of Craigellachie nature reserve, and you may even be lucky enough to see golden eagle. During the winter months look closely into the snow-covered heather for ptarmigan – these ground-nesting birds are tricky to spot in their winter plumage but look carefully and you may see dozens at a time hiding quite close to hill tracks in plain sight.
